Things are warming up as we get further into spring, and the open mic crowd is coming back to Kupros. No. Scratch that. The crowd never left Kupros, it’s the nice weather that’s coming back, even if it did cool a little in the late evening this week.
So this Kupros Mayday Tuesday most of the usual crowd were in attendance. Outlaw biker clubs call their club meetings “going to church”. The same could be said of the weekly sessions at Kupros and most other open mics in our region. We go to keep the faith.
So Marty Taters and Lare Crawley fired up the sound system, Stouffer led out on stage, and the fun started. Who else was playing or just hanging out?…. Lasagna (Stouffer’s other half), Chowderheart, Ray Ray, Wes Sams, Kai and Guillermo, Jenn Rogard, Leo Bootz, and the Cheap Bastards Club. Also a few others who are captured in photos below but not named (my apologies for not getting their names off the signup list). And me, who enjoyed teaming up with Lare on a few old tunes from the 60s/70s.
While on the subject of songs from that era, Jenn Rogar agreed to front the vocals for me on “Funky On My Back”, a song that was a staple of any playlist by bay area powerhouse vocalist Lydia Pense, still the front lady for Cold Blood. Don’t forget, Jenn. I’ll be ready to back you whenever you’re ready to sing that one.
Many thanks to Marty Taters for sharing his slot with me rather than let me go home without playing after I’d arrived late and found a full sign-up list. That’s just typical of Tater’s hospitality as an open mic host. He does everything he can to fit everyone in somewhere. Just like a church: no one gets turned away.
