Just days before Christmas a group of Café Colonial open mic regulars homed in on host Marty Taters’ monthly third-Thursday open mic night, to hang out together for the last Café Colonial open mic of 2017, and — as Lare Crawley pointed out during his set — to celebrate the Winter Solstice, officially the shortest day of the year and the first day of winter.
As we move into 2018 we’re looking forward to posting new stories on visits to open mics in Roseville, Folsom, Auburn, and Placerville, to take performer photos and to try and describe the feel for those open mics outside the metro Sacramento area, all located from 30-60 minutes’ drive from Sacramento’s downtown. Every one of them is unique and has its own charm.
Most open mic hosts will tell you that it’s good to move outside your comfort zone on occasion by visiting an unfamiliar new venue. Each of them has a special talent for welcoming new performers and making their on-stage experience the best ever. There is really nothing to lose except for a few extra bucks’ worth of gas. But the upside is that you can make potentially valuable new contacts in the community of music performers, and maybe even begin some new friendships.
Here are some photos of the gang that came out on Dec. 21. Christmas is now a few days behind us, so Happy New Year to you all.

Kurt Michaels has lived in the Sacramento region for most of his adult life and these days is semi-retired from the band grind. His greatest regular weekly enjoyment is hanging out with his Tuesday Open Mic musician friends at Kupro’s Craft House on 21st St. in Midtown.
