This past summer of 2017 Brandon Lee has been hosting a Tuesday evening open mic on the inviting patio at the Metro Kitchen & Drinkery in Sacramento’s R St. District. Somewhere along the line Brandon identified a need for a reliable open mic locator for local musicians, one that would be responsive to scheduling changes affecting our local region’s open mic venues. There is nothing so frustrating for a person fresh to open mics as when they travel to one only to find the open mic has been cancelled or moved to a different day or time slot. An open mic website should be reliable.
Brandon also concluded that finding one or more persons to blog on the website might help tie together our music community in some small way. To that end, he asked friend Kurt Michaels whether he might be willing to contribute regular blog postings to the new Sacramento Music Mic website, based on our local musicians-in-development talent pool. Hell, even little fish in a little pond appreciate recognition.
Kurt couldn’t say no. Beginning in late October 2017 he will begin posting the first of a series of his own local musician-focused pieces on this Sacramento Music Mic blog, to turn the spotlight on people in our own Sacramento region whose musical lives deserve recognition. And if you happen to recognize Kurt at an open mic, talking to musicians, taking photos, or interviewing someone in particular, you’ll know where those efforts will lead.
Kurt Michaels has lived in the Sacramento region for most of his adult life and these days is semi-retired from the band grind. His greatest regular weekly enjoyment is hanging out with his Tuesday Open Mic musician friends at Kupro’s Craft House on 21st St. in Midtown.
